Listened to The Sport Psych Show w/ @danabrahamssport episode ft. @iainhifey (thanks for the recommendation @fabricegautrat!) and it really got me thinking about a lot of things, but in this case the idea that even in a non-opposed passing pattern, things break down. Most passes come to us (like in a game situation) slightly bouncing or off-center from the ideal path to the foot we want to play the ball. Learning to adapt the mechanics of a first touch or simple pass to deal with those types of variations is everything in the game. Can you receive something that is less than ideal and make it ideal for the next player who receives your ball? Being skillful in this sense is less about perfect technique and more about being able to “fix it” when it’s off. And believe me, I had my fair share of passes that needed fixing
