Almost three years ago, my wife and I made the decision to move to San Diego. I hadn’t spent much time here prior to that but quickly fell in love with America’s Finest City.
Soon after moving here, I was introduced to Mike Stone and Nick Stone, two of the backers behind the SoccerCity project. They informed me that they were interested in bringing a Major League Soccer team to San Diego and would welcome my involvement if I wanted to be part of it. I was both honored and excited about the possibility of bringing a new sport, specifically soccer, to my new hometown!
As we started the SoccerCity process, I had a number of people tell me that “nothing ever gets done in San Diego.” They would tell me that San Diego was the city that let the Chargers and Clippers leave, the city that only had one professional sports team, the city that had two sports venues that were literally falling apart. I was told that we had no chance of making SoccerCity a reality because our partners didn’t have the political connections that the other side had and that they would undoubtedly influence the process. It turns out they were right.
Except this time they met their match.
What we have created is truly remarkable. Against all odds, we have pushed forward to bring YOU, the people, what you have been so desperately wanting. You have told us that you are sick of nothing ever happening in this city. You have told us that you want more professional sports in this town. You have told us that you want a beautiful River Park to get built in Mission Valley. You have told us that you want a vibrant sports and entertainment district and a new stadium for Aztec Football, Major League Soccer, concerts, international soccer, and so much more. You have told us that you want to help SDSU expand in a responsible way that doesn’t put taxpayers and students at risk. And most of all, you have told us that you want it to be 100% privately funded.
Guess what San Diego? We listened.
And now, FINALLY, you have the chance to be the generation that says YES to something. You have the chance to stand up to the people who have kept this city from progressing for decades. This is your chance to be the difference. You can forever be remembered as the voters who made San Diego a truly world class city!
This has been your fantasy. Go make it a reality.
This Tuesday, November 6th, vote Yes on E and No on G!
